Word search books look alike, but the details decide whether one is fun or frustrating: how big the grid is, which directions the words run, how large the letters are and whether every word is really there. This guide covers each, for children and adults.

Choose a word search book by the solver. Children do best with big letters, ten or so familiar words and words that run only forwards. Adults enjoy larger grids, more words and words that run backwards and diagonally. Every word should appear exactly once, with an answer key at the back.

Words that only read left to right, top to bottom or diagonally down are easy for a new reader to follow. Backwards and upward words double the search and are where adult puzzles get their challenge. A good book tells you which directions to expect; ours print it on every puzzle page.
