Puzzle Books for Kids

Children stay with a puzzle book when the first pages feel easy and the later pages stretch them a little. This guide covers which puzzles suit which ages, what to look for, and the two printable kids' packs we make.

The short answer

Choose a kids' puzzle book by reading level. Children who are not reading yet do best with mazes, which need no words. From about six, word searches with big letters and familiar themes build letter skills. Look for difficulty that grows page by page and an answer key for grown-ups.

Key takeaways

  • Pre-readers: mazes. Early readers: word searches.
  • Start a little below the child's level so the first win comes fast.
  • Difficulty should grow through the book.
  • Wide paths and big letters suit small hands.

Look for room to grow

A book that is the same difficulty from start to finish gets finished in a day or abandoned on page three. Our mazes grow from 6 by 6 to 14 by 14 through the pack, and the word searches mix short and longer words across thirty themes.

Big targets for small hands

Thin lines and tiny letters frustrate young children. Our maze paths are wide enough for a chunky pencil or crayon, and the word-search letters are set large on a 10 by 10 grid.

What puzzles practise

  • Mazes: planning ahead, patience and pencil control.
  • Word searches: letter recognition, spelling and careful looking.
  • Both: sticking with a task to the end, and the pride of finishing.

Printable vs. a printed puzzle book

With a printed book, a page done is a page gone. With a printable pack, a favourite maze can be done again, a sibling can have their own copy, and a page that went wrong can simply be printed fresh.

How we make every puzzle

Every puzzle in our packs is generated and then checked by computer before it is allowed into a pack. Anything that fails a check is thrown away and replaced.

  • One route per maze

Every maze is a perfect maze, so there is exactly one way through.

  • One solution per sudoku

Each sudoku is solved by computer and kept only if it has one answer.

  • Every word once

Each word-search word is checked to appear exactly once in its grid.

  • Answers included

Every pack ends with a full answer key, in A4 and US Letter.

Questions about puzzle books for kids

What is the best puzzle book for a 5-year-old?+

Mazes. They need no reading, the goal is obvious, and small mazes can be finished quickly. Our maze pack starts at 6 by 6 for exactly that reason.

Do kids need to read for word search?+

They need to recognise letters and match short words. Most children manage that from about six. Our kids' word searches only run across, down and diagonally down to the right.

Are the answers included?+

Yes. Every pack ends with a full answer key, so a parent, teacher or the solver can check the work.

How fast do I get it?+

Straight away. The download page opens as soon as payment goes through, and a link is emailed to you as well, so there is no shipping and no wait.

How do I print the pack?+

After checkout you download a PDF in both A4 and US Letter. Print it on any home, office or school printer, single or double sided. Ordinary printer paper works well for pencil.

Can I print copies for my family or class?+

Yes. For personal and classroom use: print as many copies as your household or class needs. You may not resell the files or the printed pages.
