Activity Books for 5 Year Olds

At five, many children are just starting to read, which rules out most puzzle books. This guide explains what works at this age, how to help without taking over, and why our maze pack is built to start small.

The short answer

The best activity book for a 5-year-old needs no reading and gives a quick win. Mazes are ideal: the goal is obvious, small mazes can be finished in minutes, and difficulty can grow as the child does. Our pack starts with 6 by 6 mazes and grows to 14 by 14.

Key takeaways

  • At five, choose activities that need no reading.
  • Small mazes give fast, confidence-building wins.
  • Wide paths suit chunky pencils and crayons.
  • Let them try first; help with hints, not answers.

What 5-year-olds can do alone

Five-year-olds can follow a path with a finger or pencil, notice when they hit a dead end and try again. What they usually cannot do yet is read instructions. That makes mazes the most independent puzzle at this age: the start and finish are marked, and the rule needs no words.

Why mazes come first

  • No reading needed.
  • The goal is visible from the start.
  • A small maze can be finished in a few minutes.
  • Each maze practises planning ahead and pencil control.
  • Every maze in our pack has exactly one route, so there is always a right answer.

How to help without taking over

  1. Show them START and FINISH and trace the first few steps together.
  2. Let them try alone. Dead ends are part of the fun.
  3. If they are stuck, suggest tracing back from the finish.
  4. Praise the finishing, not the speed.
  5. Print the same maze again if they want another go.

A pack that grows with them

Our mazes start at 6 by 6 and grow to 14 by 14 through the thirty pages, so a five-year-old can finish the first page and an eight-year-old still has a challenge at the end.

Next step: word searches

Once letters are familiar, usually from around six, a simple word search is the natural next puzzle. Our kids' word search uses big letters on a 10 by 10 grid with words that only run forwards.

How we make every puzzle

Every puzzle in our packs is generated and then checked by computer before it is allowed into a pack. Anything that fails a check is thrown away and replaced.

  • One route per maze

Every maze is a perfect maze, so there is exactly one way through.

  • One solution per sudoku

Each sudoku is solved by computer and kept only if it has one answer.

  • Every word once

Each word-search word is checked to appear exactly once in its grid.

  • Answers included

Every pack ends with a full answer key, in A4 and US Letter.

Questions about activity books for 5 year olds

Can a 5-year-old do a word search?+

Some can, especially with help. Most children find word searches easier from about six. Mazes are the better first puzzle.

How long does each maze take?+

The first small mazes take a few minutes. The largest ones at the end of the pack take much longer, which is why the pack lasts.

Are the answers included?+

Yes. Every pack ends with a full answer key, so a parent, teacher or the solver can check the work.

How fast do I get it?+

Straight away. The download page opens as soon as payment goes through, and a link is emailed to you as well, so there is no shipping and no wait.

How do I print the pack?+

After checkout you download a PDF in both A4 and US Letter. Print it on any home, office or school printer, single or double sided. Ordinary printer paper works well for pencil.
