The short answer

The best travel activity book for kids is light, has one puzzle per page and needs nothing but a pencil. Ours has 24 travel-themed puzzles for ages 6 to 9: word searches about airports, road signs, packing and hotels, and mazes that grow page by page. Print it before you leave.

Key takeaways

  • Screen-free, battery-free and nothing to lose under the seat.
  • Hand out puzzles a few at a time to stretch them across the trip.
  • A clipboard makes writing in the car or on a tray table easy.
  • Travel themes connect the puzzles to the journey.

What is in the travel pack

Sixteen word searches with travel themes: on the road, at the airport, on the plane, packing list, all aboard, road signs, car games, snack time, the seaside, mountains, a city trip, the countryside, map words, a hotel stay, nature spotting and are we there yet. Eight mazes sit between them and grow from 6 by 6 to 12 by 12.

How to pace puzzles on a long trip

  1. Before you leave, print and staple the pack into four small bundles.
  2. Hand out the first bundle once the excitement of leaving wears off.
  3. Save one bundle for the slowest part of the journey.
  4. Mix in car games, music and looking out the window between bundles.
  5. Keep the answer pages with the grown-up in the front seat.

Puzzles on a plane

Tray tables are the perfect desk. A maze or word search fills the gap between take-off and the drinks trolley, and during the descent, when screens often have to be put away. Pack pencils rather than pens, which can leak with changes in cabin pressure.

If your child gets car sick

Some children feel unwell looking down at a page in a moving car. If that is your child, save the puzzles for stops, trains, flights or the hotel, and play spoken games like I spy on the road.

A road trip activity pack for the whole family

For personal and classroom use: print as many copies as your household or class needs. Print one set per child so nobody has to share, and print a second set of a favourite maze when someone wants a rematch.

How we make every puzzle

Every puzzle in our packs is generated and then checked by computer before it is allowed into a pack. Anything that fails a check is thrown away and replaced.

  • One route per maze

Every maze is a perfect maze, so there is exactly one way through.

  • One solution per sudoku

Each sudoku is solved by computer and kept only if it has one answer.

  • Every word once

Each word-search word is checked to appear exactly once in its grid.

  • Answers included

Every pack ends with a full answer key, in A4 and US Letter.

Questions about road trip activity book
