Activity Books for Autism Level 3

Level 3 describes autistic people who need very substantial support. Puzzle time here is usually shared: an adult and child side by side, with very simple pages, lots of patience and no pressure. The goal is a calm, enjoyable moment together, and a finished page is a bonus.

The short answer

For autistic children at level 3, puzzle time works best as a shared, low-pressure activity: very simple pages such as tiny 3 by 3 mazes, an adult alongside, tracing with a finger before a crayon, and stopping as soon as it stops being fun. Step 1 of our Calm Puzzle Ladder starts here.

Key takeaways

  • Shared activity: an adult and child side by side.
  • Very simple pages: tiny mazes with wide paths.
  • Finger tracing first, then a chunky crayon.
  • No pressure: enjoyment matters more than finishing.

What level 3 means, and what it does not

In the DSM-5, level 3 means "requiring very substantial support" in social communication and in restricted or repetitive behaviours. Many children at level 3 have little or no spoken language, and some have other conditions too. None of this rules out enjoying a simple maze together, but it changes how puzzle time looks.

Start with the smallest mazes

Step 1 of our Calm Puzzle Ladder starts with 2 by 2 mazes, with paths wide enough for a finger. The way from START to FINISH is short and clear, so the child can succeed in seconds. Step 1 grows to 4 by 4, and Step 2 continues from 3 by 3 to 6 by 6.

Shared puzzle time, step by step

  1. Sit beside the child, not opposite, with the page between you.
  2. Trace the path with your finger, saying START and FINISH.
  3. Invite the child to trace with their finger, guiding gently if they want help.
  4. Offer a chunky crayon to draw the line, or keep it a finger game.
  5. Tick the I finished! box together and celebrate in the way the child enjoys.

Sensory and practical comfort

  • A quiet, familiar spot with few distractions.
  • Thicker paper, or a laminated page for dry-wipe pens.
  • Chunky crayons, triangular pencils or finger tracing.
  • Short sessions, with breaks the child can choose.
  • Work with the child's teacher or therapist on what suits them.

Word searches at this level

The four-word, six by six word searches in First Steps can work as a matching game: point to a word in the list, then find its first letter together in the grid. Some children enjoy this, others prefer the mazes. Follow the child.

How we make every puzzle

Every puzzle in our packs is generated and then checked by computer before it is allowed into a pack. Anything that fails a check is thrown away and replaced.

  • One route per maze

Every maze is a perfect maze, so there is exactly one way through.

  • One solution per sudoku

Each sudoku is solved by computer and kept only if it has one answer.

  • Every word once

Each word-search word is checked to appear exactly once in its grid.

  • Answers included

Every pack ends with a full answer key, in A4 and US Letter.

Questions about autism level 3 activity books

My child does not speak. Can they still use the packs?+

Yes. Mazes need no words at all, and pointing or tracing works just as well as drawing. Many families use the mazes as a shared, quiet activity.

What if my child only wants to do the same page?+

That is fine. Print the same page as many times as they like; repetition can be comforting and enjoyable.

How fast do I get it?+

Straight away. The download page opens as soon as payment goes through, and a link is emailed to you as well, so there is no shipping and no wait.

Are the answers included?+

Yes. Every pack ends with a full answer key, so a parent, teacher or the solver can check the work.
