Maze Books for Kids

Mazes are often a child's first real puzzle, and a good maze book can last for months. This guide covers why mazes work so well, what makes a maze book good, and the printable pack we make.

The short answer

A good maze book for kids starts with small, simple mazes and grows steadily, has wide paths for young hands, gives every maze exactly one route and includes an answer key. Our printable pack has 30 mazes from 6 by 6 to 14 by 14 for ages 5 to 8.

Key takeaways

  • Mazes need no reading, so pre-readers can solve them alone.
  • Difficulty should grow page by page.
  • Perfect mazes have exactly one route, with no loops.
  • Wide paths suit small hands and chunky pencils.

Why mazes suit young children

Mazes need no reading, so even a pre-reader can solve one alone. They practise planning, patience and pencil control, and the finish line is easy to see.

Graded difficulty

Each maze in our pack is a little larger than the one before, growing from 6 by 6 to 14 by 14. Larger mazes have more turns and dead ends, so difficulty rises steadily through the pack.

Exactly one way through

Every maze is a perfect maze, which means there is exactly one route from start to finish and no loops. The answer key shows that route for every page, so checking is easy.

Maze-solving tips for kids

  1. Trace the path with a finger before using the pencil.
  2. If you hit a dead end, go back to the last turn and try the other way.
  3. Try starting at the finish and working back to the start.
  4. On big mazes, lightly shade dead ends so you do not try them again.

Printable vs. wipe-clean maze books

Wipe-clean books let a child redo a maze, but the same maze over and over loses its surprise. A printable pack gives the same reuse, by printing a page again, with thirty different mazes and no special pens.

How we make every puzzle

Every puzzle in our packs is generated and then checked by computer before it is allowed into a pack. Anything that fails a check is thrown away and replaced.

  • One route per maze

Every maze is a perfect maze, so there is exactly one way through.

  • One solution per sudoku

Each sudoku is solved by computer and kept only if it has one answer.

  • Every word once

Each word-search word is checked to appear exactly once in its grid.

  • Answers included

Every pack ends with a full answer key, in A4 and US Letter.
