Sudoku Books

Sudoku books vary far more than they look: in how the levels are set, in whether every puzzle can be solved by logic, and in how comfortable the grids are to work on. This guide covers all three, then shows the printable sudoku book we make.

The short answer

A good sudoku book has clearly graded levels, puzzles that each have exactly one solution so you never need to guess, a full answer key and grids large enough for pencil notes. Our printable pack has 60 puzzles, 15 each at Beginner, Easy, Medium and Hard.

Key takeaways

  • Every puzzle should have exactly one solution; ours are checked by computer.
  • Levels should be stated and should climb steadily.
  • Bigger cells leave room for pencil marks, which you need on harder puzzles.
  • A printable sudoku book never runs out: print any grid again.

How sudoku levels work

There is no single standard for sudoku difficulty. Our levels are set by how many numbers, called givens, are filled in at the start. Fewer givens means more deduction before the grid opens up.

Medium1530Pencil marks start to help

One solution, every time

A real sudoku never needs a guess. If a grid has two possible solutions, you reach a point where logic cannot decide between them, which spoils the puzzle. Our generator solves every puzzle and throws away any with more than one solution, so logic alone always gets you to the end.

How to solve sudoku: the basic method

  1. Pick a row, column or 3 by 3 box that is nearly full.
  2. List the digits from 1 to 9 that are missing from it.
  3. For each empty cell, rule out digits already in its row, column and box.
  4. When only one digit can go in a cell, write it in.
  5. When a digit can only go in one cell of a row, column or box, write it in there.
  6. On harder puzzles, pencil small candidate digits in the corners of cells and erase as you go.

Large, small and pocket sudoku books

Pocket sudoku books are easy to carry but leave tiny cells with no room for notes. Large sudoku books are comfortable but bulky. A printable book sidesteps the choice: print one puzzle per sheet at full size, fold it into a pocket, and leave the rest at home.

What makes the best sudoku book

  • Puzzles checked to have exactly one solution.
  • Clearly stated levels that climb in order.
  • One puzzle per page with room to work.
  • A complete answer key.
  • Enough puzzles at each level to practise before moving up.

Where to buy sudoku books

Our sudoku book is an instant download, so there is no searching shops or waiting for delivery. Buy it, print the first puzzle, and start in minutes.

How we make every puzzle

Every puzzle in our packs is generated and then checked by computer before it is allowed into a pack. Anything that fails a check is thrown away and replaced.

  • One route per maze

Every maze is a perfect maze, so there is exactly one way through.

  • One solution per sudoku

Each sudoku is solved by computer and kept only if it has one answer.

  • Every word once

Each word-search word is checked to appear exactly once in its grid.

  • Answers included

Every pack ends with a full answer key, in A4 and US Letter.
