The rules of sudoku in one minute

A sudoku is a 9 by 9 grid split into nine 3 by 3 boxes. Some cells already have digits. Your job is to fill every empty cell so that each of the digits 1 to 9 appears exactly once in every row, every column and every box.

That is the whole game. There is no arithmetic and no guessing: every puzzle in our pack has exactly one solution, reachable by logic.

Your first puzzle, step by step

  1. Look along each row for one that has eight digits filled in. The ninth is whichever digit is missing.
  2. Do the same for columns and boxes.
  3. Choose a digit, say 1, and find every box that does not have a 1 yet.
  4. In that box, cross out cells that share a row or column with a 1 elsewhere.
  5. If only one cell is left, the 1 goes there.
  6. Repeat for each digit. Each one you place opens up new moves.

Why start with Beginner puzzles

Our Beginner puzzles give 40 numbers at the start, which means there is almost always an easy next move. That is what you want while the method becomes second nature. Fifteen of them is enough practice to find your rhythm before Easy puzzles, with 34 givens, ask for a little more.

Mistakes beginners make

  • Using a pen: one wrong digit can ruin the grid. Use a pencil.
  • Guessing: if no move seems possible, look at a different digit or box instead.
  • Skipping levels: jumping to Hard too soon is the fastest way to give up.
  • Not checking: compare with the answer key after each puzzle to learn from slips.

When to move up a level

Move up when you finish three puzzles in a row without checking the answers. If the next level feels like a wall, go back for a few more of the easier ones; the printable pack lets you print any puzzle again.

How we make every puzzle

Every puzzle in our packs is generated and then checked by computer before it is allowed into a pack. Anything that fails a check is thrown away and replaced.

  • One route per maze

Every maze is a perfect maze, so there is exactly one way through.

  • One solution per sudoku

Each sudoku is solved by computer and kept only if it has one answer.

  • Every word once

Each word-search word is checked to appear exactly once in its grid.

  • Answers included

Every pack ends with a full answer key, in A4 and US Letter.
